Christian, I completely have to agree with you in every sense of your post. I believe that Lady Gaga has ultimately transcended her core persona and created a much larger piece of art instead, that is on display for the world to see. I think that people tend to forget how simple and alike all of us human beings are. This said, how many times do you recall being told as a little kid, that being different (not in a non-conforming way of course), would lead you to embark on great horizons. So why do we question the authenticity of such endeavors by any artist? Moreover, why do we care? Lady Gaga is simply channeling her inner creativity and catapulting it out into the universe, in a uniquely organized way. As artists ourselves, I think that we can understand how difficult it is to create a name for yourself by merely blending in. You must stand out. Lady Gaga sure does that phrase justice. From her strange dancing, even stranger costumes, and completely mind-boggling performances, she truly does embrace being different. Ironically, for once, society seems to be accepting of such an attitude.
I would also like to add that the intellectual depth of her messages, whether they are revealed through her stage theatrics, her songs themselves, her costumes, or her videos, are captivating themselves. As you said, they are not easily captured and people need to dig for them. Perhaps she is not as surface-like as everyone pegs her to be and her work, which is entangled with layers upon layers of references and messages, might just be more than enough to prove that.
In a world full of Top 40 Music and empty music videos, it is quite refreshing to see a strange lady wearing a telephone in her hair piece and a dress made of meat to an awards ceremony...regardless of whether or not she is "authentic" or not. She is making history.
